Life Drawing at Revive Art & Craft Supply

149 William St, Middletown, CT 06457
Hosted monthly, next date TBD (expected July 2026)
$15 per person

What it is

Traditionally live drawing sessions host a nude model for artists to focus on anatomy, but our sessions will have models in clothing ranging from casual modern to elaborate costumes. Artists are encouraged to focus on color, composition, and drapery.

The sessions are untutored (no formal instruction is given).

Who it is for

All skill levels age 18+! Whether this would be your first time trying a life drawing class or a seasoned artist, all are welcome. The sessions are for practicing your skills and experimenting with mediums and techniques. Free yourself from the need to make a masterpiece. Progress over perfection!

What to bring

No materials will be provided. You are welcome to bring (almost*) anything you would like to use, but be aware we currently only have tables available at this time.
Some supplies are available for purchase at Revive. You can challenge yourself by using only materials purchased next door.

Suggested but not required:

  • Paper or canvases of choice

  • Table or floor easel

  • Pencils

  • Pen/Ink

  • Pastels

  • Watercolor

  • Acrylic Paint

  • Gouache Paint

*For the safety of all, the following are not allowed at this time:

  • Oil paint

  • Solvents

  • Sprays (paint/fixative)

What to Expect

The typical studio session is 2 hours long and is structured as follows:

Warm-up
10 min (2 min poses)
10 min (5 min poses)
10 min break

The short poses are to loosen up and capture gestures quickly. This teaches you to identify important shapes and movement in a pose and to trust your instinct.

Long poses
20 min pose
10 min break
20 min pose (different pose)
10 min break
20 min pose (different pose)
10 min break

The long poses allow you to study the forms for longer. Art is equal parts observation and technique. Notice the large shapes, the negative space, and the perspective to practice drawing what you see, not what you think you see. Artists are welcome to draw the full model or focus on a body part or element to study (i.e. hands, portrait, etc.)

General Studio Etiquette: be considerate of others around you

  1. Respect the model, their privacy, and boundaries. They are here to help you learn. Do not take photos of the model.
  2. Keep your phone away. Leave the room if you need to take a call. Do not take photos of the model.
  3. Arrive on time. The class is structured and it is disruptive to others when they're trying to focus to have a newcomer set up late.
  4. Quiet is expected. There may be some quiet background music, and you may bring headphones so long as they don't disturb your fellow artists or the model.
  5. Chatting and snacks are allowed during break periods.
